Kher was born 7 the 7th March 1955, in the Kashmiri Pandit family in Shimla. The name of his father is Pushkar Nath Kher and his the name of his mother is Dulari Kher.

His father worked as an officer in the department of forest Himachal Pradesh & his mother was a homemaker. He finished his schooling at the D.A.V. school in Simla.

He started studying in economics and business at Government College, Sanjauli in Shimla. However, he was dropped to study Indian theater at Punjab University, Chandigarh.

Kher completed her studies at his school, the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi in 1978.

He wrote the poem ‘Your Best Day is Tomorrow!’ the year 2020. The lyrics were based on his experiences with the COVID-19 crisis.
He shared a poem by Lucknow poet Pankaj Prasun on his father’s 9 9 anniversary of his death. He shared it via social networks.
